Connection: Contemporary Urban Courtyard

Project type

Residential Urban Co Living (Student Project)

Location

Manchester, England

Date

December 2024

Brief:
Design a 12m x 18m shared urban courtyard for apartments in Manchester’s historic Ancoats district, formerly red‑brick cotton mills. The space will serve professional couples without children, offering a flexible, sociable environment for relaxation, connection, and enjoyment as part of a wider co‑living development.

Key Design Characteristics:
The layout is divided equally into a private patio, a private garden, and a shared central space.
Each apartment has its own patio and garden with discreet pathways leading to the central area.
The shared central space features seating, a water element, and planters, enclosed by two arcs with access from both private zones.

Design principles:
Soft geometry and cohesive materials: Circular forms contrast with rectilinear architecture, while light limestone and layered planting soften the palette and create visual harmony.

A central space designed for connection: Elliptical arcs, hidden entry points, and a circular water feature create intrigue, encourage movement, and foster a sense of shared community.

Guided movement and framed enclosure: Stepping‑stone pathways inspired by Jacquard punch design lead residents inward, while pleached Hornbeam provides scale, privacy, and a sheltered courtyard atmosphere.
