Connections - A garden to gather as a family

Project type

Residential Design and Build

Date

September 2024

Location

Beaconsfield, London

Brief: A beautiful family home for 40 years, set in 2 acres of rolling garden with views across into woodland and over fields.

Undulating garden with changing levels that slopes away from the house, both up to the fields at the back, and down towards the woodland on the right.

Client was looking to upgrade the existing patio to create more usable space, with opportunities to appreciate the views from the house and patio into the wider garden.

The house is a traditional style and so an ‘English country garden’ look and feel sat well with their design preferences.

Scope of the project included paths and steps running along each side of the house which connect with the small courtyard area outside the kitchen, and the main patio outside the conservatory, with a path leading out into the garden, with new planting that provides enclosure whilst leading the eye out into the wider garden.

As a sloping North facing garden drainage and retention were key considerations for the design and construction.

The approach to the design was to:

Open up the space and simplify the flow
Create garden rooms with different characters and purpose
Connect spaces with a fluid movement wrapping around the house

Connect the house with the garden through natural materials and planting
Subtle shifts in levels reflecting the undulating garden
Capture the natural light

Reflect the local style, the changes in levels
Use of warm and light tones
Repeated use of materials and patterns
